Children's Ministry Goals

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Children's Ministry is a bit different from other opportunities for your children. In a sport, you will see the progress your child makes in developing their physical skills. In a music program, you will see progress in their ability to play music. With Children's Ministry at ULC, it is a little harder to track progress unless you know what to look for. Below is our intent for providing ministry opportunities for children at ULC: our purpose, our goals, and some ways to see if our program is making a positive change in your child’s life.

Purpose: To teach children about God, God’s story (in particular: Jesus), and how to love God and love other people.

Goals:
  • Learn important Biblical stories
  • Learn how to love God through: actions, choices, prayer, and care for creation
  • Learn how to love other people through: actions, words, choices, and service
  • Learn why the church exists and why we gather together each week
  • Learn songs to remember key things about God
  • Have fun together in a safe environment

Ways to track progress:
  • See if your child is curious about God and God’s story (ask them questions and see what they are learning)
  • See if your child uses language to love people (please, thank you, you’re welcome, I love you, good job, etc.)
  • See if your child’s actions are loving (sharing, caring about others, helping, noticing and thanking helpers, gratitude)
  • Ability and confidence in praying (talking to God)
  • Exhibiting characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Children in Worship

Children are important to us here at ULC and we’re dedicated to providing a strong foundation for their lifelong faith formation. We invite you and your children to worship, learn, and grow together toward the front of the Sanctuary.

Consider the “Three E’s” that help us welcome a child’s participation in worship:
  1. Educate: It is our joy and hope that children will feel welcome to worship in ways that uniquely appeal to their cognitive development. We have a children's message each Sunday to help our children feel welcome, learn in a way that is curtailed to them, and have space with the pastor/leader that is unique to them.
  2. Engage: Being up front is a great way for children to see, hear, learn, and participate in worship! Each week there will be a variety of different ways to capture the imagination of our children through the sharing of scripture, music, dancing, coloring pages, puzzles, and more.
  3. Equip: By providing a dedicated place for children in worship, they are better able to concretely understand their value as a child of God, and to know, “There’s a place for me here.”
Exercising the “Three E’s” with children in our congregation continues to help us grow as an inter-generational faith community. Together we are on the road of lifelong faith formation for the sake of Christ’s church.  We hope that you and your children will feel welcome to enjoy the space in worship; to actively participate, focus, grow in faith and learn about God’s love in their own unique and wiggly way!
