High School Youth GroupBeginning in 2025, ULC partner's with Faith Lutheran Church in Okemos for our HS Ministry. Our hope is that, together, we will build lasting friendships, learn about Jesus, and learn how to be loving community together.
HS Students can also get involved in the wider church through local and national gatherings, including Living Water Ministries Camp, the Charge event, and the ELCA National Youth Gathering. To offset the costs of camps and trips, our youth and families organize congregation and community fund-raising projects and also park cars for MSU home football games. At the conclusion of their senior year all of our ULC high school seniors receive prayer quilts lovingly created by members of our Prayers and Squares Quilt Ministry. Bring Them A Meal!ULC hosts HS Youth group on the 1st Sunday of the month from 5pm-7pm. Included in this gathering is a meal. Would you consider making a meal for our high school youth? We Went to New Orleans!
The ELCA National Youth Gathering is held every three years in which all 8th -12th grade
youth in the ELCA are invited to gather together for worship, service, learning, and fellowship. The theme this year was “Created to Be,” exploring how God has created us to be brave, authentic, free, disruptive, and disciples.
ULC had 7 students and 4 adult leaders attend the 2024 ELCA Youth Gathering this July in New Orleans, LA. We gathered together with 16,000 other high school students for worship, service, and learning.
We headed down early and took in a few memorable experiences: The National WWII museum, a music and history tour of New Orleans, riding on the street car system, and a paddleboat dinner and cruise on the Mississippi River. During the Youth Gathering itself we had the opportunity to worship together in the Smoothie King Stadium, explore the service learning conference center, and learn about some of the history and importance of marching bands in the New Orleans area.
Throughout our time in New Orleans, we were able to eat amazing food and experience a variety of cuisines. We saw God at work through the joy and mutual respect of those attending the event as well as the New Orleans community, we saw God at work in the midst of a great thunderstorm, wherein we took shelter in an ACE Hardware as well as a local coffee shop, through the events of the Gathering itself, and we saw God at work amongst our group as we grew closer together and learned how to not only tolerate one another (16 hrs in a van one way) but even to love and care for one another.
Many thanks to ULC for making this trip possible! Thank you to those who worked football parking shifts, donated money, and helped with fundraisers. We are grateful to have been able to do this with your assistance! Praise God for unique opportunities to learn, serve, and grow within a loving community!
